Early History of DuPage County
In the early days the Illiniwek, and later the Miami, Iroquois, Sak, Fox , Kickapoo and Pottawatomi Indians lived in this area, rich in fish, game and vegetation. In 1673 Father Jacques Marquette and French explorer Louis Joliet came to the area, following the Illinois and DesPlaines rivers from the Mississippi. Trappers and traders came throughout the 1700s and early 1800s, the best known being a Frenchman by the name of DuPage. In 1800 he settled where the east and west branches of the river join. The first permanent settlement was made in the fall of 1830 and the spring of 1831. Read more about the History of DuPage County in excerpts from "A History of the County of Du Page, Illinois," 1857.
